These are just a few opportunities for your consideration. We welcome any additional concepts that may maximize mutual strategies. Sponsor an Academic Mentor Center
The Academic Mentoring Program was designed to provide the student with additional classroom support while also building self-esteem, life skills, confidence, all while improving the educational outcome of our youth in at-risk communities. Prior to the start of the mentoring relationship the youth's most recent California Standardized Test (CST) scores will be reviewed to determine the students' level of achievement in both Language and Math. Additionally, the selected youth will be given a Self-Esteem Evaluation. All of the data will be compiled along with commentary from teachers, counselors and the Extended Learning (ELA) staff. An individualized Academic Mentoring Plan will be developed thereafter. The mentor, in conjunction with the youth's teachers, counselors, school administrators and program staff, will work together to ensure that the plan goals are achieved. Children Uniting Nations/Mentoring Partnership for Los Angeles Youth developed its first Community-School Based Mentoring Academic Mentor Center for foster youth in May 2005. Our program pilot began through the funding of the Community Development Block Grant Funding. These funds were distributed to explore the specific needs of foster youth and develop a program at Foshay Learning Center in South Los Angeles. The Academic Mentor Centers (AMC) have proven to provide foster youth with the sustained, caring relationships that lead to successful educational outcomes. Furthermore, the unique structure of the AMC's have demonstrated great potential and replication locally and across the country. With this in mind, CUN began phase two of its expansion in 2006 and began with a strategic plan in partnership with the Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN). Through the partnership between ICAN, CUN and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) the Los Angeles Mentoring Model (LAMM) was designed and incorporated throughout Los Angeles County. Research indicates that school based mentoring programs contribute to significantly lower levels of behavioral problems and substance abuse. At the same time, research reveals a boost in self-confidence, self-control, cooperation and attachment to both the school and community. This is an opportunity for you to make a difference in the life of a foster child. Please call Children Uniting Nations for more information on adopting an Academic Mentor Center at 310-203-0500. Sponsor "Keeping the Promise to At-Risk Youth" Conference
Presented by Children Uniting Nations "Keeping the Promise to At-Risk Youth" conference was prompted to gain national attention to the needs of our country's most vulnerable children—our foster children. Our disregard to this abandoned population inevitably leads our foster children to no other alternatives than those of negative consequences. "Keeping the Promise to our At-Risk Youth conference has become one of our nation's leading conferences supporting at-risk initiatives. The conference has become a strong vehicle to our voiceless children. Through this innovative advocacy approach, Children Uniting Nations strives to better the lives of the children living in-and-out of home care. This national venue and political platform will focus on the wellness, education and life long stability of our foster children throughout our country. This is an opportunity for you to help make a difference. Sponsor Day of the Child
Launched in 1998, Children Uniting Nations is the driving force behind the annual Day of the Child. Since its inception Children Uniting Nations been able to expand mentoring opportunities for youth in foster care and raise awareness about the challenges faced by these young people. The Day of the Child (DOC) is designed to bring awareness to and support the needs of children who by no fault of their own are living in and out of home care. The primary goal of the day is to secure "long-term" mentors for these very special children. Over the past eight (8) years Day of the Child has enjoyed tremendous success, with hundreds of children receiving the love and guidance of their mentors. The individual stories are numerous and heartwarming as demonstrated in the following quote: "Because the of my mentors interest in my education and their unselfish desire to show me the world, it motivated me to achieve and become the honor student I am today. I have become more self-confident, assertive and most of all I have direction in my life. I thank GOD for blessing me with my mentors." Day of the Child Overview:
